Up until June 1981., Međugorje was a typical Herzegovina village. People lived of the land, planting tobacco and wines, growing vegetables and making wine so they can live humbly and peacefully with their families. Times were hard as the rocky land of Hercegovina. A lot of people from Međugorje were leaving to try their luck in bigger towns in the region, countries of Western Europe and distant lands across the ocean.
Our Blessed Virgin Mary changed everything when she chose Međugorje as the place where she will appear. Besides six seers, who were children at the time, Blessed Virgin Mary chose the whole parish and decided to guard it with love, as the place that will help spreading her messages to the world. Since that time, Blessed Virgin Mary still appears to the seers and millions of people are coming to Međugorje every year for prayer, reconciliation and peace that this special shrine offers.
